Elizabeth Arden loved horses all her life. In the 1930s, she established Maine Chance Farm and began raising thoroughbreds. She took excellent care of her "babies", even massaging their legs with her signature product, Eight Hour Cream. In racing circles, she was known as Mrs. Elizabeth Graham. In 1946, she was featured on the cover of Time in connection with her horseracing pursuits, and in 1947 one of her horses, Jet Pilot, won the Kentucky Derby.
Helena Rubinstein was an avid art collector, and used her collection to decorate her salons and her homes. Portraits of her were painted by many of the important artists of the day, and art in general became an important part of her public image. In particular, she was a notable collector of African art. In 1935, seventeen of her pieces were featured when the Museum of Modern Art mounted the first major exhibition of African art in the United States. Later she took the collection on tour around America.
